5 Easy Steps To Create An Amazing Photography Portfolio

The following are the 5 easy steps to create an amazing photography portfolio that will help you land more clients:

1. What Is Your Purpose For Creating A Photography Portfolio?

The first and the most important step in creating an amazing photography portfolio is to consider the purpose and goals for making it. In simple words, consider the reason for making a photography portfolio. Whether you are creating a photography portfolio for landing a client as a photographer or are you applying for a photography job? Or are you making a photography portfolio for applying to a college art program?

Considering the purpose and goal for making an amazing photography portfolio will have a huge impact on the way you create a photography portfolio. This will dictate how you put your photography portfolio together and what goes in it. So, make sure you keep this in mind while you start building your portfolio.

2. Know Your Audience

Make sure you know your target audience. This is also a very important thing to consider while you decide the design and content of your portfolio. Your images need to show your skills for your targeted audience. Make sure you know what kind of response do you want from them?

For example: If you are applying for a job at watch company like Rolex, your audience which is in this scenario is the employer from Rolex would want to see how well you can photography a watch. So, make sure your photography portfolio includes product photography of watch. This will help them understand your skills and know what your style is.

You can’t show landscape images if you are applying for a product photography job at companies like Rolex. So, the bootom line is that knowing your audience will help you decide the desingn and the content you put in your portfolio.

3. Decide A Theme Accordingly

When deciding a theme there are many factors involved like for example: what is your photography style? or do you photograph more than one genre? If you are someone who specializes in more than one genre for example: you are good at Portrait Photography as well as Landscape Photography you need to find a theme that supports both of your genre.

Find a theme that supports your photography style and genre or genres you shoot. Here’s two more examples: For an artistic purpose, you could limit your portfolio to dark moody and white photography only. If you are trying to get a job as real estate photographer, your theme could be dynamic images taken of various kinds of buildings.

4. Decide The Format Of Your Portfolio

You need to decide the format of your portfolio whether it should be printable format or a digital format. This is also important for the following reasons: For instance, gallery owners and traditional artists might prefer to see a beautifully bound print portfolio. On the other hand, people affiliated with industries like media and advertisement may want to see your work presented digitally.

An electronic format can help you emphasize different aspects of your work than a printed format can, and vice versa. I would recommend for chosing both, you can make a portfolio that supports both format. You never know what oppurtunity will present in front of you. So, it is better to be prepared for both.

5. Go Through Your Work And Start Choosing

Now that you know the purpose for making a photography portfolio, your audience and you have decided the theme and format of your photography portfolio, it is time you go through all of your work. Go through the images you have photograph and start dividing them into the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ pile which fits the above mentioned steps and tips.

Just ask yourself does the image fits your criteria, if yes than put it in the ‘yes’ pile and if it doesn’t fit the criteria put it in the ‘no’ pile.

Now, that you know how to create an amazing portfolio that will help you fulfill your purpose whether it is to land a job are to apply for an art workshop at college. Let’s take a look at 10 important tips to remember while creating an amazing photography portfolio.

10 Important Tips To Remember While Creating An Amazing Photography Portfolio

While creating an amazing photography portfolio there are some important tips for everyone to remember. This tips will help you to create an amature looking portfolio to a professional looking portfolio. This tips will not only help you while creating a photography portfolio but also it will help you after you are done creating a photography portfolio. So, just follow the below 10 tips to get your desired results:

1. Choose A Good Quality Image Which Has An Impact

While creating a photography portfolio make sure you put the images that are of very good quality and the images that will have an impact on viewer. What I mean by that is, put high quality images that doesn’t need much explanation. The audience of your portfolio need to understand just by looking at your image rather than reading a long description.

This is because for the following reason: For instance, if you have applied for a job for a wedding photographer your employer might have already recieved many job applications with an amazing photography portfolios so, they won’t waste their time in reading long descriptions for the reason you chose to take that photograph. They need to know instantly why you took that photo just by looking it.

For example: If you showcase a photograph where the groom is in happy tears by looking at her bride walking down the aisle, just by looking at it the audience will already understand why you chose to take that photos. Just by looking at it you can say that it is an emotional happy moment that needs to be captured and cherished forever. This type if images has an impact on viewers and they would want to see more of it that will increase your chances of getting hired.

2. Consider The Order Of Your Images

Taking the order of your images into consideration is one of the most important and the best thing to do for achieving a professional looking and an amazing photography portfolio. Again as mentioned earlier, your audience/viewer/employer might have already recieved several amazing photography portfolios and they will not waste their time on checking every photos in your photography portfolio. You need to make sure you impress them and make them curious right at the start.

So, the best thing to do is showcase the best work at the start. Your first few image should be your best work. It will help you increase your chance to impress your audience which will ultimately lead them to want to see more of your work and increase your chances of standing out and getting hired. It will make them curious to know what more do you have.

3. Keep It Simple

Make sure you keep your photography portfolio as simple as possible. The audience should not have any difficulty while going through your photos of your portfolio. Your photography portfolio should be easy to access and easy to navigate. It shouldn’t be complicated as that will discourage your viewer and they wouldn’t wish to see anyfurther. It should be easy to understand the content of your photography portfolio.

4. Less Is More

There is no definite numbers of photos that you can include in your photography portfolio but almost every professional photographers recommed that less is more. What it means is, do not include thousands of images in your photography portfolio because: I am going to keep telling you again and again until it fits into your brain that your audience/viewer/employer might have already recied dozens of portfolios and they won’t have time to look through each and every images.

So, showcase only your best good quality images which has impact on your audience as mentioned in the above tips that will help you make them curious and they would want to see more of your work. So, the bottom line is, do not include several images upload as less images as possible but not too less that you won’t be able to show your different photography skills.

All this talk about professional photographers makes me come to our next important tip:

5. Seek A Professional Opinion

It’s important to be able to evaluate your own work critically, but it will be difficult to be completely objective. Be as objective as you can, but consider getting an impartial opinion from someone you trust (preferably a professional photographer). Bring this person in when you’re in the final stages of selection. Take notes of what they have to say and by taking a second opinion under consideration tweak your portfolio. Make sure you also take an opinion from someone who is not a photographer as your employer probably won’t be a photographer in almost every cases.

6. Keep Updating Your Portfolio

Make sure you always update your portfolio after every job or every month or year. This is because as you shoot more you will ultimately learn more and imporve your skills and you need to make sure that you are showcasing your each and every photography skills. Keeping your portfolio up to date is very important especially in this world of photography because there is always something new coming up every other day. So, bottom line is make sure your portfolio is not out-dated and update it regularly.

7. Remove Old, Flawed And Repetitive Images

As mentioned earlier you need to keep your portfolio update which means removing old images. Besides that make sure your photography portfolio doesn’t have any flawed image, if there is remove it immediately and also remove repetitive images for example: if you have one portrait of a girl in a black dress with white background make sure you don’t have another same type of image. Make sure you diversify your photographs with colors, different locations and mood of a photograph.

Here is another example: If you are a portrait photographer and you have a photo that shows a sad emotion make sure you don’t have anything more than two sad emotion portrait. Diversify it with adding another portraits which shows happines, anger, etc.

8. Include A Call To Action

While submitting a portfolio make sure you let them know who you are. You can write a very short explantion of what you do and make sure you include some kind of contact information in it. So, if someone likes your portfolio and they want to contact you they should be immedaitely able to find your contact infromation. It could be your social media, email or contact no, etc.

9. Add Finishing Touches

You should always add finishing touches to your portfolio. What I mean by that is, you should include tags, title or short description not more than 50 words. You should prefer adding titles and tags to your images.

For example: If you upload a photograph of a couple, make sure you add tags like love, romance, dating, etc. That will help the audience to navigate through your portfolio.

10. Consider An Online Portfolio

While creating a photography portfolio, consider building it online. Digital portfolios are becoming more common, especially in technology and media fields. There are two options:- creating your own website or using a portfolio hosting site like Pixpa, squarespace or wix.

Unless you are prepared to buy web space and create a website from scratch, the hosting site is a better option. These sites let you upload your photos into galleries and then you can customize the order and the appearance.

Digital portfolios can be updated frequently, whereas a print portfolio is usually a finished work. Online you can add and take away images and continually customize your portfolio. You should still try to keep your chosen images concise, but with digital portfolios it’s acceptable to display a few more images than a print one would. 20-30 is a good number.
