Abstract Photography is all about perception and experimentation. Abstract Photography is a test for your imaganation skills. Abstract Photography sometimes is also referred as non-objective, experimental or conceptual photography.
After reading the above paragraph, you probably have a very good idea of what abstract photography is all about. So, now let’s get back to our main topic.

Now, I am going to explain what each one of those tips means and how will it affect your Abstract Photography. So, let’s get started!
1. Always Be On a Look Out For Curves And Lines
Whenever you are planning on shooting abstract photography, always make sure the first thing you do is to be on a look out for curves and lines. Finding curves and lines for your abstract photography will help you to lay a foundation for your photographs as well as help you to make your abstract images more interesting and eye catching for your viewers.
Finding curves and lines will also help your draw attention of your viewers as it will help them to pay attetion to the details of your abstract photograph.
2. Look Out For Patterns And Textures
Just as lines and curves will help you to make your abstract photographs more interesting, it is the same with patterns and textures. Abstract photography is not all about subjects, it is a very unique kind of photography where you have to make it more appealing and aesthetically pleasing for your viewers and you can achieve it by adding patterns and textures in your abstract photographs.
Abstract photography is all about capturing a normal or boring objects in a very unique way, which can be achieved by finding patterns and textures of the object or subject you are trying to photograph. Adding textures and patters will help you guide your imagination for your viewers, that is why it is important to be on a look out for textures and patterns for your abstract photography.
3. Shoot Through An Object
By shooting through an object will help you to use them as filters for your abstract photoshoot and will result in an intriguing abstract picture. For instance, shooting through objects such as translucent glass, water, glass bottle or even a car window on a rainy day can result in distortions and light diffractions that will create unusual but visually interesting images for your abstract photographs.
This will not only make your abstract photographs interesting but also make it aesthetically pleasing and help draw the eyes of your audinece.
4. Keep It As Minimal As Possible
By saying to “keep it as minimal as possible”, what I mean is to do the process of reduction or elimination in your abstract photographs. Basically what it means is, a photographer removes any unnecessary elements or objects that creates any sort of distractions in your image. This process can also be done in post-processing for instance, cropping your image but I would recommend you to not rely on post-processing for this process.
This is because by cropping your image might result in loss of image quality, instead you should do it while you are shooting your abstract photographs by perfectly framing your main subject by using different composition techniques. A photograph with a lot of unnecessary or unwanted elements or objects is a bad photograph that is why it is important to remove those distractions in your photographs and keep it as minimalist as possible.
5. Get Creative With Your Imagination And Experiment With It
Abstract photography itself is a test of your imaganitive skills and it is very important for you to get creative with your imagination in order to get an unique, aesthetically pleasing and interesting abstract photograph as your final output. You can achieve it by experimenting each and every photography skills you have got such as composition, framing, trying different angles or perspecting as well as lighting techniques.
You should be willing to get creative with your imagination for instance, you should be willing to shoot out of focus, play with your depth of field, or shoot from very weird angles. You can also rotate your photos, or even change the white balance of your images. You should be able to imagine each and every thing in your mind even before you start shooting.
6. Try Different Perspectives
Not only abstract photography but photography in general, you should never settle for one single perspective. As mentioned in the above tip #5, you should be willing to try different perspective by trying different angles to find that unique angle which will help your abstract photograph to stand out.
It is always better to try 3 to 4 extra different angles instead of settling for that one angle you think it’s great. This is because you never know until you try it and who knows may be trying another angle and perspective might be even better than the first one you thought was great. For instace, if you took a shot from a low angle perspective, always make sure you try out different perspective such as shooting the same photograph from an high angle, from side or moving closer or further away from the subject.
7. Embrace The Colors
In abstract photography, colors will do wonders for your visual story telling as well as adding context to your photographs. Let the colors do the storytelling which will also help you create an unique, aesthetically pleasing as well as an interesting image for your abstract photography portfolio. Make sure you embrace the colors and let them pop up in your image which will aslo help you to create a soothing image for the eyes of your viewers.
This tip is important also because colors can influence your viewers to appreciate and look at your photos in many different ways. You can also use colors to highlight the point of interest or just to add visual impact to your image
8. Experiment In Different Lighting Conditions
Again as mentioned in the above tip #5 and tip #6, you should also be willing to experiment with different lighting conditions. For instance, take a shot in a bright lighting conditions and than take a shot at low light condition. You can also experiment with your lighting setup by moving and placing your light source or subject to create different effects.
You can also add or remove a particular light source as well as trying it from different positions such as, lighting your subject from above, from the side, etc. You should also experiment with different types of lighting techniques such as, hard lighting, soft lighting, high key light, low key lighting, etc.
9. Always Post-process Your Photograph
Last but also one of the most important tips for your abstract photography, especially if you are a beginner photographer is that always post-process your photos. This is because a single tweak in your editing process can take your abstract photographs to the next level. You can use post-processing techniques such as color theory to highlight a point of interest amongst other things.
That is why it is always important to post-process your image as it can help you in many ways such as experimenting it with your imagination skills will definitely make your photos more appealing to your viewers.
